Barely Caught the midnight train outa Memphis,
Then I grabbed me a greyhound bus,
Some gal shot me down in Nashville,
Now I'ma fixin ta lay down like a dog an die,
only made it ta Kansas city,
Ran into a good girl with a mean ole mangy dog near New York,
Growled an showed me her teeth,
Got kicked out the emergency ambulance,
So had to walk the rest of the way home,
Yea guess I look pretty tattered,
Cause that dog tore my pants an lost my key,
Had to sleep in my cheap suit last night,
Feelin totally abused & scattered,
Guess I'm a wrinkled blue man,
So what else is new,
Nothin like a few holes in a cheep suit,
Ya might say I dig sleepin around,
Cause that's the way I do.....

January 17, 1999 Broken sky diver struggles to heal Jumper survives 3,000-foot fall By SCOTT ANDERSON Record-Eagle staff writer PETOSKEY - Somewhere in the skies over San Diego nearly three years ago, Mark Colburn's world began to change. "Colburner," as his buddies called him, had been a U.S. Navy SEAL for almost a decade. He had a reputation for fearlessness, for being as tough as they get. He'd survived every training nightmare the elite force could serve up. He had stayed awake for three days in a row. He had cut out a patch of ice in Alaska and jumped in the frigid waters below, not just to take a plunge but for three full minutes. On May 17, 1997, Colburn was making a parachute jump. It was no big deal. He'd done it 300 times before. He knew the drills so well that he hoped to become an instructor soon. But Colburn's 301st jump would be unlike any other. Chris O'Donnell, a rookie with only 20 jumps under his belt, followed Colburn out of the plane too closely. He needed to spread out, as the SEALs say. He needed to grab a piece of the sky far away from anyone else. There was only one place in that sky he could not go - Colburn's path. But that's exactly where he was headed. Colburn pulled his rip cord. His parachute opened, jerking upward, slowing his descent. In a blink, O'Donnell, tearing through the heavens at 120 mph, was upon him. He ripped through Colburn's chute, knocking him in the head with his knee. The 20 cells of fabric in Colburn's parachute collapsed to three. Flapping frantically, the wounded chute and a wounded Colburn spiraled the remaining 3,000 feet to the earth. He landed feet first, the force of his fall forming a crater where he hit the ground. He broke almost every bone in his body. And to everyone's amazement, he survived. Now, under the skies of northern Michigan, Colburn's world is changing again - painfully and slowly - in a Petoskey gym where he goes to heal his body and a fear of falling that makes the smallest of steps feel like walking on a balance beam. NOW Nearly every day, Colburn arrives at Bentley's Health and Fitness Center in downtown Petoskey. He walks in the door, somewhat shakily, but on his own two feet. His arms raised to hip level, like a sleepwalker feeling his way in the dark, Colburn moves with small steps. "Heel-toe, Mark, heel-toe," his trainer, Rob Moats, says calmly but firmly. Colburn, now 38, smiles that same cocky smile he had before the accident and cracks a joke to his new drill instructor. "He's like, like that guy in the movies," Colburn says, slightly mocking Moats. "He's like Arnold." Brain damage has slowed his speech but not his sense of humor. "Come on Mark, here we go," Moats says, picking up the pace, walking backward as Colburn struggles to keep up. The laugh leaves Colburn. He begins to focus, now moving more quickly, but his legs are still stiff, as if needing oil to loosen them up. His eyes gleam with determination. Within his badly shaken and repaired body, the SEAL remains. There's no other way to say it, Mark Colburn should be a corpse. He's among the small fraternity of people worldwide who have fallen thousands of feet and crashed to the ground without a parachute - without dying. Don't think for a minute he doesn't realize it. "I'm not doing too bad for a cauliflower," he says. Colburn's body has nearly recovered from the accident. Doctors gave him only a 5 percent chance of surviving. He had broken his back, neck and hips. He lay in a coma for six months after the accident and then spent several more months in an "agitated" state, thrashing about uncontrollably. Then, suddenly, he awoke. He thought his mother was the cleaning lady and friends were just people visiting the wrong room. Soon, he started remembering faces, then names. Memories returned, like those of meeting his wife, Yvonne, while she, too, was in the Navy and stationed in Guam. He remembers almost everything, but not the accident. He remembers Yvonne finding a dead bird outside their home the morning of the jump. He remembers her saying it was a bad omen. "She said, 'Don't jump today, Mark,'" he recalls. "She was right." FORGIVENESS Before Colburn could do the things he's doing today, he had to say goodbye to the past. That meant saying goodbye to the bitterness that his life was shattered. It started by forgiving the man who changed it forever. O'Donnell suffered only a bruised knee in the accident. His chute opened. He landed safely and he continued through the ranks in the SEALs. He has met with O'Donnell since. "It's just like what the Pope did. He forgave that guy who shot him," Colburn says. "And that was on purpose. What happened here wasn't on purpose." Colburn joined the SEALs at 29, almost unheard of for that unit of the military. But he entered with a background in physical stamina. He was an Iron Man triathlete, spending hours running and in the water. And before that he was a "repo" man in California, a fitting job for a man of 6 feet and 195 pounds. Colburn had fallen once before while in the SEALs. He dropped 38 feet when a helicopter pilot took the chopper up too quickly as Colburn was rappelling out. He walked away from it, laughing. Now Colburn gets on the treadmill and turns the speed up to a quick walk. He jokes again that he's afraid the treadmill will move too quickly and send him flying, "just like George Jetson." Laughter has gotten him and his family through it. His mother made him a T-shirt that said, "I survived a 3,000-foot parachute fall." He wore it proudly through his recovery. But after the visits from friends subsided, Mark fell into depression. The progress, though miraculous, didn't seem to match what he'd already lived. He came to Petoskey to live with his mother, Liliane, and to be near his sister, Michele Sturt. He said he left California for a while to give his wife a break from the constant doctor's visits and therapy, so that she could finish her college degree at San Diego State University. He has tried to conquer his fear of falling with another jump from an airplane more than a year after the accident. That time, Colburn jumped with his psychologist. The two were tied together in tandem. But it didn't work. When it came to sky diving, all of the instincts and fearlessness Colburn once knew, and relished, were gone. His trainer, Moats, has become one of his best friends. Moats said Colburn already has come a long way toward battling his fear of falling. They knew each other before, but the bond has grown through their work in the gym. Moats gets teary and shakes his head when he talks about it. "He's learning to trust me," he said. "He's learning to trust himself." His goal, and Colburn's, is for the two to go running this spring. THE LIFE AFTER Colburn's mom is writing a book about his experi ence. She calls it "The Green Room," which refers to a giant wave that can curl around and surround a surfer in bright green water. Colburn used to surf when he was growing up in Florida. In fact, he was known to grab his board and hit the breakers even as hurricanes came in. When he was in the coma after the accident, Colburn's pals would say, "Wake up Colburn, you're just in the green room. Wake up." Liliane remembers her son the prankster, the kid who would ride a unicycle to school. He frequently came home with scrapes, bruises, sprained ankles and sometimes broken bones. He was always kidding around, always taking risks. "He's just a miracle and he continues to be a miracle," she said. His sister Michele said each day seeing Colburn puts things in perspective for her. Almost every step is a challenge, and she says watching him fight for each one gives her strength in her own life. "He always would perform in front of people and that hasn't left him," said Michele Sturt. "He certainly has down times. But they're moments, not days or weeks." Colburn doesn't know just what the future holds for him. He does know he wants to work hard to get out of Michigan and back to the warm climate that he once enjoyed. He's getting there, he says, slowly but surely. "I'm half the man I used to be, I'm half the man I'm gonna be. And that makes the whole man," he said.
