The TBI Chatroom |
It's strange the way we go through life , not giving a second thought of what might happen to us.
August 10 th 1993 I was driving a truck from my home state, Missouri to Tacoma Wa . Just stopped for dinner at Sidney Ne.
A quick bite at the McDonalds and I was on my way . When I walked across the divided service road , I was struck by a car. The man was going the wrong direction on the oneway service road. He didn't see me and I never saw or heard anything .
I came to in the sleeper of my big rig , a man was shaking me asking if I needed help. He said "you were just hit by a car, we are calling an ambulance".
Witnesses said I was thrown up about 12 feet in the air and landed on my head on the winshield post and then on the concrete. I guess I climbed into the truck and layed down. I woke up next in a hospital bed. Hurting all over, broken leg, back and neck fractures, hip and shoulder injuries. Major head ache '
Other than being bruised all over, I was able to be transported home two days later via mother-in law and wife. I made myself work hard trying to rehabilitate and was able to return to work in November 93. I love to drive and travel. I found I was unable to remember where I was going, and couldn't keep track of all the traffic. I started to have siezures and blackouts . I was scared to drive that big truck. I quit in January 94, havn't worked since then.
Because I looked so strong and healthy , doctors never really listened to my complaints . I couldn't think ,remember or deal with the stress. I was diagnosed: depression, anxiety, PTSD.
I continued to see doctors for 3 years at the VA , while searching the medical sites on the internet and local library. Trying to fgure out why I was having so much trouble.1 found that many people who had head trauma were suffering the same symptoms I was. Through the help of this group and other TBI lists, I was encouraged to see a Nuerophycologist, and Nuerotogist. After 6MRI's, 2 C.A.T.scans, 2 EEG's, ENG, and ABCDEF.....nueropshyc tests btah blah blah blah...
After all the tests I was found to have front temporal lobe damage, partial loss of smell , taste, epilepsy and many other strange symptoms. You all know how it is .
It was devistating to be told I would not be the same again, yet , I was relieved to know that it was not my imagination. I am learning to adjust to this new life, strange as it is ! So now I find help and support here, with some of the finest people I have ever met. Thank You Everyone ! ! !
A special thanks to all those who make this site possible !!!
