Amber Coons

Picture of Amber Coons Hi, my name is Amber, I'm 24 years old and live in Southern Maryland. I was in a serious automobile accident nine years ago. I had just turned 15 years old. I don't remember anything about my life before the accident. I'm lucky to remember what happened a few days ago, or for that matter a few minutes ago. I was in a deep coma for about six months and gradually came out of it day by day. My entire brain was damaged to some extent and they say I was clinically dead when they found me in the car. I was in the hospital from January until September. I had to relearn everything from walking to eating all over again. My next major achievement, and believe me it was a struggle, but I managed to earn my high school diploma, even though I was a year behind my class.

I've come a long way since the accident but life is still tough everyday. My biggest disability is that my brain does not tell my eyes what I am seeing. I don't recognize people (even my own family, only by voice) in fact I can't even tell you what I look like myself. I don't recognize food so my family has to tell me what I'm eating. My little sister Caitlin who's six years old helps me match my clothes and earrings just about every day. She also helps me find things when I put them places and can't remember where.

I still need a lot of help everyday and it's hard admitting it. My Mom and Dad have found an Adult Day Care Service where I can go everyday. I've met new people and I enjoy it a lot. It gives me something to look forward to every day. As you've probably already figured out, I doubt that I'll ever be able to work. I like to express my feelings and the best way I've found to do this is by writing poetry. It also passes the time away on the weekends when I'm not at day care. I hope you check it out!
