Betty "BJ" Haggerty

My life changed forever the afternoon of 2/3/98, when I was on my way home on the highway, and the driver behind me was not paying attention. The light on the highway changed and I came to a stop and driver behind me hit me at 45mph. HIs pickup went up over my bumper, missing the gas tank by 1/2 inch. It shoved the trunk into the backseat & jammed everything forward, braking the motor mounts and putting the fan through the grill.

I did not realize at first that I was hurt. My head went forward sharply and back hitting the headrest. My left leg was shoved forward damaging the foot and lower leg. I also received nerve damage to the neck and back. By the time I drove home, I had no memory and for the next three weeks I walked around not realizing what was happening around me, it was called Post-Concussive Syndrome. I did not realize my leg had been hurt badly, until after the concussion cleared. My back and neck hurt so bad I could not move them and was diagnosed with severe nerve damage. That required Spinal Epidermal Injections to remove some of the discomfort.

In April after my accident I had the first of three surgeries to restore the foot and lower leg to full use. Six months after the accident my hands started to tremor, then my legs began to jump when sitting. My memory started to fade and I started to have heavy convulsive seizures every few days lasting one to five hours in duration. I went my doctor who did not know what was happening, so he sent me to a specialists who diagnosed me with a Closed Brain Injury. He suggested medication that might start to slow down my symptoms.

Now two years after my accident we are still trying to control my seizures. have memory loss, tremors, and left side weakness. But I thank God I am alive and can enjoy my two teenage girls and still do things with them. We all appreciate life more now and make sure that we are there for each other. If I can be there for encouragement or to listen feel free to contact me at anytime.
