The TBI Chatroom |
My husband Don who is a professional firefighter went to work at 8:00am.
I went about my day cleaning house and puttering around with the kids. It was after lunch about 1:00pm when all of a sudden I heard a frightened voice, one of which I knew coming over the scanner. I went to the scanner to hear another one of Dons brother firefighters calling for help and that Don was crushed underneath a car. I fell to my knee with fright. I told my children to get around and go to there grandmothers house which was right down the street and told them that I thought that there dad was hurt at the station.
Panicked I got in my car and drove myself to the station where Don was working. Don capton stopped me from going in to see Don and said that he was badly hurt and that he was being worked on. He just stood there and held me and tried to calm me down.
A police officer came to me and told me that he would be giving me a ride to the hospital and that we would meet up with the ambulance when they got there. We escorted the ambulance all the way to the hospital.
It was quite a while before anyone came and said I could see my husband, I in the mean time called his Mom and Dad and the Priest from our parish.
When the Drs. came to talk to me , they told me the news wasn't good and that Don had been crushed by a car while working underneath. The jack he was using had bent in half trapping him there. He had broken ribs, a punctured lung, and a broken collar bone. Also because of the crush to the chest he was without oxygen and in a coma. They said it didn't look good and that he was in very very critical condition and would probably not make it the night. That very night , the president of the state union in the Fire Dept. came to see me. He told me that Don's name was spread throughout the Fire depts across the state and that 22,000 Fire Fighters were praying for Dons recovery. Well three days went by Don still in a coma and on a respirator with tubes in his chest but still hanging on.
The Neuro dr in charge of his case said because he was still in a coma he would never be off the respirator and would be a vegetable for the rest of his life. Well that night I prayed and asked God for his help. I offered up my husband to him and asked Jesus for his healing hands. When I returned to the Intensive care Don squeezed my hand for the very first time. It was then I knew that God was with us and healing him.
A very good friend of our told us that his mother was at a prayer group meeting and they were all praying for Don when his mom said she saw Jesus himself come and kiss don on the head. A second sign of encouragement. Well the next day Drs. told us that if we wanted Don to be left on a respirator he needed to have a trake put in and a tube in his stomach to eat. Everything they told us was not encouraging, I said that I knew my God and My husband and was not willing to give up on him. The next morning Don had his surgery. Well that night again I prayed. I told God that I knew that Don would never want to be left on a respirator for the rest of his life and that again I needed his help. Well the very next morning Don began to breathe on his own. Our Miracle continued.
Days went by and everyday Don began to become more and more awake. moving his legs and arms, giving me kisses.
On June 9th he was transferred to a brain injury unit at Binghamton General Hospital. It was a program that encourages people to wake from comas and with the help of therapists and a DR to start and bring them back. Well don began to make progress. slowly yet making it. I thanked God every day for the help he was giving us. three days after going to the unit the trake was removed. I prayed on the way to the hospital that Don would be able to respond to the therapists so that they knew he was there. Well when I reached the hospital that morning the therapists were in the hall very excited. Don had spoken his first word. He asked where am I at??
again just more and more signs that Jesus was with us every step of the way in this journey.
Well with continued therapy Don continues to get better . He can walk now with assistance and talks to us and knows us. Just a couple of weeks ago Don told me that Jesus was with him because he came on night and kissed him on the head. (I was just amazed remembering what that friend of ours mom saw when she was in prayer group) With time he will continue to heal. I know that It is my job to tell others of the wonderful miracle that God has given us and that Jesus walks with us in good times and in bad.
There is a fight about bills and such and I dont know how we will make it but with Gods help I know we will get through.Cost of care is out of sight. Please just pray
