Bil Vargas

I am Bil Vargas.

Last August 4, 1997 I went to get an operation in the Veteran's Hospital in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico about an aneurysm. I started to the hospital and they did everything they had to do, and they said I had to get an operation to get out an aneurysm. They said it was about 7mm, and I had to have the operation. At the first time I said, forget about it. Then they said, "Well, you can live for two weeks or three months." So I said, "Well, then I guess that's all I can do."

On August 12, 1997 I went to the operation room and after 7:11 am I went to sleep. This was a Tuesday. A few minutes later I started to sing an old song, just in case that's the old I love. Nine hours later, the operations said, "I can't believe this. He's alive!" Two days later, I woke up. "I'm hungry," and they laughed.

Then I found out that I couldn't speak, write or read anything.! Then the doctors said, "Oh well, he's got an Aphasia." What the hell is that, I asked about, three months later. That means that you can't read, write or talk! I remember that I wanted to cry. "You'll never be able to do these things." And I started to cry, but saying, "No! I will!"

Then I decided I had to learn -- everything! So I learned, everything! And so that's what I've been doing. Then the doctors have said, "Oh my God, you're a miracle. Or a genius."

What do you thing? I can write (and that's the most important thing that I was lived for), and I'm learning to read (and I've get saying I will be able to read "War and Peace" for the third time), and to talk (eventhough I've been a silent voice all my life).

Right now, although the doctors say the don't know what to do, I am alive!!!!
