Easter sunday 2000 at 1:45 in the afternoon,my 14 year old son was skateboarding with some of his friends. He is an adventurous young man and when it comes to his skateboard,,well he is like most other 14 year olds, fearless. His friends dad was driving down a paved road allowing the boys to hang on to the truck for a free, fast ride. The bearing of my sons right front wheel got hot from traveling at a steady speed for a period of time and the right front wheel came off of his skateboard. Everythings still kind of sketchy about what happened, but basically, my son fell under the truck and was run over accross the midsection of his body cracking his pelvis. There is still no explanation for what happened to his head. My sons face was broken. A fractured skull in 2 places. From the right front forehead around to the back of his skull, and at the base of his skull near the nape of his neck. Miraculously a doctor was on his way home and came on the scene of the accident 30-40 seconds after it happened. Upon arrival at the local hospital, careflight was immediately called to transport my son to Reno where he could receive the medical attention that he would need in order to survive. I was not given much hope for his survival. He was in a coma for 23 days, ICU for 3 months, and rehab facilities for 14 months. He now lives at home with me and his sister. He is attending regular school and has truly exceeded almost ALL of the expectations that I was given for him. My son suffered a severe TBI, and yes he does have some disabilities. Severe short-term memory loss, deaf in his right ear, right side of his face nerve damage,no sense of smell, right eye sewn shut(eyelid does not blink),and some limitations of movement to his left hand. But my son has an attitude that is amazing!! He is always smiling, laughing, enjoying his life to the fullest! He can carry on an intelligent conversation with anyone, and he will make you feel good about your day because he realizes he is fortunate to be alive!!
