The TBI Chatroom |
Hello everyone,My name is David and this is My Story...Some will say that I was born lucky , so when I was hit by a car as I was in the front yard of my house... And later in life I wrecked on a moped and and hit my head on the pavement with no helmet at 40mph...On the day I was released from the hospital after another moped accident, where I did not hit my head, we were in a high speed wreck caused by another car on the freeway, I cracked the windshield of the van we were in with my head... I recovered fairly well from these and other injuries that I wont mention here, things were ok for a few years until... I was a passenger in an old Datsun 510 where the driver said he fell asleep and drove off the freeway !!!
As I was sitting in the front passenger seat, asleep myself, unaware until seconds before the final impact, I awake to see gaurdrail being mowed up in front of my side of the car and then Wham !!! Only to find out a later that we came to a Stop after hitting the pillar that holds up the overpass on the freeway.
By the Grace of God , Just before I fell asleep in the front seat of that car, I fastened the seatbelt in my lap. The car was estimated to be traveling at a speed in excess of 85mph, the impact was so great that I was flung forward from the waist up only to smash my forehead onto the dashboard and leave a 2" deep impression where my head hit.
That put me in a coma for two weeks. When I woke up, I had lost all control of my motor skills and had little if any memory of much , including who I was.
If thats not enough, about three hours after my release from the hospital after coming out of this coma... My younger brother was driving me to the bank and had stopped to allow another car to make a left turn when Wham !!! Yes , we were Rear-ended by another car traveling at about 45mph. I refused to go back to the hospital at that time and waited until the next day when the pain was far too much for me to take!! So I went back to the doctor. They just said that I was a mess!! To put it bluntly.
I was ready to give up on any hopes of recovery!!
The slow pace of getting better was even more painful then the injuries themselves.
After several years of what would be considered reasonable recovery to most people, I was able to enter the mainstream and get a real job. I was lucky enough to land a job as a Tool and Dye machinist trainee. I was working and recovering. Thru alot of hard work I seemed to be doing rather well until I wrecked on a motorcycle at 85+ mph with No Helmet !! Head first into the center divider!! When I regained conciousness,it was rather obvious that I was hurt kinda bad.I chose not to take the ride in the ambulance, as my friend would be along soon. When he showed up I climbed on the back of his bike and he took me to the hospital.
They were waiting for me since the police had called and told them I was on my way. So, I walked into the ER and was taken to ICU after they checked me out and cleaned me up as best they could.
Fractured skull, burst eardrum and many deep abrasions, not to mention the bodily contusions. Just like me, my bike was wasted... and it was stolen from the crash site.
I got the bike back, the police found it dumped by the side of the road a few miles away from the crashsite. I opted to have the bike fixed and put it in the shop. Three months laterit was fixed and so I went on my lunch hour to pick it up. I got the bike and started my ride the short distance back to work.I was about eight blocks from work ... Riding along on what I thought was a safe route thru a residential area when all of a sudden seemingly out of Nowhere off the ground comes a cable that was stretched from the telephone pole on the street to the other end which was who knows where... It wrapped around my handle bars and pulled the bike right out from under me !! (Little did I know, even the phone company was out to get me!) Was I ever embarassed to have to call my work and tell them!
The police officer that took the report was nice enough to let me lay down in the back of the squad car and take a short ride to the nearest hospital!!
People, Honestly I can tell you more,But I think you get the picture!!
The Most Impotant Lesson is This,"NEVER GIVE UP!!!"
In closing let me say this, I am a healthy productive member of society, and made good of my aprenticeship too!! Now I work as a carpenter and have several small businesses of my own!!
Good Luck, God Bless and Remember:
ALWAYS PROTECT YOUR HEAD!!
Trust Me on That One !!!
