Eric J. O'Keefe

Eric Hi gang...

Unlike most of you, I was not struck down by TBI in a single event. You might say that I took the time to build up a good TBI! I suffered several concussions between 1984 and 1998. They all occured in sporting events, one in football, and 3 playing hockey. The effects of these concussions was progressive, the first one being very light, and the others ... I don't really remember much. The thing is, I had a superman complex, and never really though much of following up with doctors... I rested a little, and went back to normal activities. Sure, I was symptomatic, but I was never clever enough to make the association, often blamming my shortcommings on a cold... a very long lasting flu.... I would sleep everywhere.... But I would be fine.

On March 17 2000, I was at my job. I'm (was?) a Production Coordinator for Molson Breweries. There was an electronic problem that had to be resolved in a hurry, and I ran under conveyors to get to itas fast as I could. From what I understand, I thought I had cleared the 4 foot high conveyors when I decided to raise my head. It (the very top of my head) hit the steel frame that supports the conveyors, my feet left the ground, and my head hit the concrete floor.

I was out for a short while... then woke up. My life had changed in that short time. I will spare you the hospital details, as I'm sure you don't need to hear them.

Eric Apparently, I decided I was again fit for work soon after... but this time, the decision was impossible to execute. I would stare at the walls, hear everything that was being said, but couldn't understand the words... I also had postgrade

and retrograde amnesia. I was overly tired all the time. I still am. I tremble, at some times, I can write. My attention span is very short, and I flood all the time. I have a great will to get better, but I also have a better understanding of my limitations. I am not superman anymore, I have been slowed by the enemy.

In 1996, my father suffered a stroke that has left him completely paralysed. I was his caregiver till I got hurt. So I know a little about that side of the injury! I applaud caregivers, as I know it's not easy!

It's a daily struggle for me, but having found this group, the struggle seems so much easier.... thank you!
