Erin

Hello! My name is Erin. I have a 4 year old son named Devin. Devin has hydrocephalus, a VP shunt, Cerebral Palsy, along with some other problems. He has these problems due to the fact that he was a preemie. My son was born at 24 weeks gestation. When he was born, he weighed 2 pounds 3 and a half ounces, he was 13 inches in length.

I was told that Devin would not live. When I was giving birth I had a nurse tell me "don't be upset when he doesn't make it," and "don't cry because he's not going to live." Well, it's 4 years and 3 months later, and he's here and happy. Thank God!

Devin stayed in the hospital for 3 months. While he was there, he was on a ventilator for a month, (which caused him to have lung problems), then he was put on C-Pap, (which is another machine to help him breathe), then when was off the C-Pap, he was put on oxygen which he stayed on until he was 6 months old.

In the hospital Devin had a head ultrasound done multiple times which showed that he had a hemorrhage in his 3rd and 4th ventricles. The doctors decided to wait and see if it would heal itself. The hemorrhage did heal, but in place of the hemorrhage fluid formed in side the brain. When he was 10 months old Devin had a VP shunt placed. Since then, he hasn't had any infections or revisions to his shunt. Thank God for that.

Devin is very delayed developmentally. He is 4 years old, he can barely sit up on the floor all by himself, he still has trouble with that, he can crawl on his stomach while pulling with his arms, he doesn't walk or stand, because he has no balance. But you know what, he's happy and doesn't care that he can't do any of those things. He loves school and he loves to play with kids even if they can do all the things that he can't do. I thank the Lord that he is happy and healthy. All the other things are just superficial.

Thank you for reading this page. If you would like to talk you can e-mail me with my screen name DnDMOMnDAD.

Thank you,
Erin
