The TBI Chatroom |
"It's suprising to learn that the path that you were taking in life is a path with BI involved." (Me)
December 8 1996 I was coming from a friends house, My girlfriend and I were driving home, with me driving her Geo Tracker when we were struck on the driver's side at an intersection by a van "timing the lights". And we proceeded to hit a third car, who was waiting for the light in the van's oncoming lane.
My girlfriend was hurt and I got my TBI. I was in a coma for about 2 1/2 Weeks. I don't remember waking up. I never questioned why I was in the hospital! I never thought it was strange being in the hospital! I figured my family was there, so I must be in the right place? I went from inpatient therapy to outpatient therapy from Dec/Jan 96' to June 97'.
I had really great support from my parents, my girlfriend and friends and family, but my parents stayed with me for 24 hours a day for three weeks!
Then I was faced with my first major decision, should I try to go back the same job I had?
I decided to take a Job Trial, but the company policy was such that I needed a clear work release without restrictions. But the company decided to give me a Job trial. I thought great! but my replacement was a younger person fresh out of Grad. school. And the company was preparing to do a massive upgrade to Windows 95. Upon hindsight I think they took advantage of my help, I did fine helping upgrading the Chicago offices. Since the main corporation was located out of state my manager was in another state. I went to a week long win 95 training and helped out there just fine, but I think what happened was that that corporation left the decision up to this new manager. He probably thought it was better to start "fresh" so that he can get trained for the things that he was not familiar with.
Through this whole process I realize how important memories are, they comprise who you are.
So right now I'm getting ready for my return to work, finding out what I can and cannot do.
