Jennifer "Jen" Siegel

On July 5, 1998 the driver of the car I was in ran a red light. We were broadsided by a car going 45 mph which spun us around 2 or 3 times, causing my head to whip back and forth. I was unconscious for about 5 minutes, and then regained consciousness (so I've been told, I don't remember the 9 days after the accident). Most of the damage was caused to the right side of my brain, as well as the frontal lobe. I had three huge bleeds on the right side, little ones all over, and the interior of my skull shredded a bunch of my brain cells off. I was unable to move my left leg for a week, and then couldn't move my foot up and down for another week. My balance was affected (needed to learn how to walk again), my short term memory was pretty much destroyed, and my handwriting went from nearly perfect to illegible. My IQ went from 150 to 108 in a matter of seconds, and I was devestated. I underwent 2 weeks of rehabilitation in the hospital (for a total of 3 weeks for my hospital stay), then went to a facility in Birmingham, Michigan for 2 months of outpatient therapy. Less than a year later I went to Center for Neuro Skills in Bakersfield, California for another 6 months of therapy. I have made a full recovery. I go to school full-time (majoring in genetic engineering) and also work full-time (I am a full-time child care provider). I still swing dance, and am able to walk, talk and chew gum at the same time. I will be receiving my Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in 2 years, and then I will be going to graduate school (Hopefully to Texas A & M, Cornell, or Duke) to get a Ph.D. I am planning on winning the Nobel Prize for my work in Genetic research.
