The TBI Chatroom |
Hello. My name is Kathy. On April 13, 1982 I was pulling in my driveway when a car hit me head on. I have no memory of these events but was told that quick response from the rescue team prevented my head injury from being fatal. Doctors gave my family slim to no chance of me even surviving the subdural hematoma. They said my brain was twisted like a pretzel and if I survived I would be paralyzed or in need of round the clock care for life. Well, I astonished the doctors by pulling through the brain surgery. I had to learn most everything again. I am now 37 years old and have short term memory loss. Stress seems to make my memory worse. All memories of childhood are gone and I can't remember events as they occur in my life today. It is a miracle that I am alive and living a life where I have learned to compensate for memory loss. Recently I got a miniature schnauzer puppy who has brought me great joy and helped me through feelings of depression I occassionally feel. I have also become part of a brain injury support group which has helped me express many feelings and situations that I thought were unique to me. I encourage all survivors to find a local group and get involved. If you can relate to my story, feel free to e-mail me with your thoughts.
