Kirk

Hello, My name is Kirk and this is our story of overcoming. I was born in 1967 and came to Nashville 1974. February 1st1975 life was taken from me by a drunk driver. Causing Traumatic Brain Injury Paralyzing my left side and giving Epilepsy. This was not easy growing up at that time. Nor is it today, it takes staying positive and most of all have faith. I ve had my lonely and depressing times. In the 80 s I was put in Group homes and institutions. Deverauex and Monroe Harding, It took a positive belief and faith to get threw this time. Davis Promotions and Advocacy began in the mid 80 s. I was in high school at Genesis, a new Special ED school which did not have required course s to graduate anyone. I found this out after years there. They had come to me my senior year telling me they could not graduate me! I was told only a certificate saying I had attended school. I said NO!!! I want a diploma like I would get at any other high school like Father Ryan. I stood to show we could. I was the first to graduate Genesis May 31st 1986 my 18th birthday. Davis Promotions and Advocacy really started getting professional after a Termination from Wild Oats. A friend from Genesis had Epilepsy like me. She said Kirk you need to go to Epilepsy foundation. Once I started to fall in a depression I let her take me there. I met the staff attending some meetings seeing heart in this Organization they were here for our families and us!!! Then came the War of Iraq. It was bad I got mad, I had been mad, for I was terminated a day before 9-11. Joyce Whitmore had broke news to us at Epilepsy that our Government was giving 30 days to raise $250,000 or our Doors shut!!!

I really got MAD then!!! I said NO, I would not allow our doors to shut nor would I allow any doors to shut when I see Organizations. that are here to help us better our lives! Getting on the phone calling others. Then came a meeting where I saw the light. Kelly Sanders who has Traumatic Brain Injury like me. She took me to my first (TBI) meeting / Traumatic Brain Injury. I saw many in this meeting like ourselves who want too OVERCOME just needing some guidance. Kelly also introduced me to Bruce Bentley who has Brain Injury like us. We all had been to Tennessee Rehabilitation Center (TRC) and were all told we could not do. We have Traumatic Brain Injury; Kelly wanted to become a Massage therapist due to Brain Injury she could not remember the body parts needed she was told, Now she owns A Soothing Touch Therapeutic Massage. Bruce wanted to continue his education, he has Brain Injury, and Bruce is about to have degrees in accounting from Tennessee State University. I wanted to stand and speak for people. I, was not able according to TRC. Neither TRC nor Voc-Rehab had any programs at our level at that time. We were independent and OVERCOMING. We came together as ONE. We became PARTNERS in POLICY MAKING!!! We are Davis Promotions and Advocacy, ONE for the PEOPLE we are! Awe welcome all to speak with us showing your ABILTIES. Uniting as the family we were meant to be. Teaching Man and Woman who we are and helping those today as well as tomorrow know they can OVERCOME and anything they set there minds too they can do! We are in the Military as well Kelly served 11 years as a Captain in the Army. I Kirk Davis have always wanted to serve. Due to what is called Traumatic Brain Injury I was not allowed to serve as I had dreamed. I swore to GOD, I would find a way to serve our Country!!! AS ONE for the PEOPLE!!! Davis Promotions and Advocacy will give any support we can to help you OVERCOME!!! We want the best for our family in the Military. We are ONE loving and believing in you!
