On December6, 2004 our family's lives changed forever. My husband was headed home from work and was only 8 miles from home when he was struck head-on by another vehicle going in the opposite direction that had hydroplaned in the rain. Steven suffered massive frontal-lobe damage with 3 deep skull fractures and bilateral subdural hematomas with massive bleeding throughout the brain. It was almost 2 hours before ems was able to extract him and care flight him to a trauma center. Survival was not expected. As a last ditch effort the neurosurgeon went in to operate with no future promised. They felt that Steven was lost to me. But what they didn't realize was that my Steven had a very strong constitution. 24,36, & 72 hours went by with Steven holding his on on Life-support. I went and got headphones and played his favorite music to him every day. And then one day 6 weeks later he woke up. He was very confused and very "frontal" as the doctors said. But he knew me. Of course he pulled every tube in him out and he was a regular houdini with restraints. He said in a low coarse voice "take me home". He went to rehab and of course went through many stages of recovery - he was uninhibited, impulsive, a regular exhibitionist, but I knew he was "in there". The day I took him home was a wonderful day. But I was in store for alot that I hadn't been warned about. I satyed home for 5 months taking care of him. We had our definite ups and downs - 2 steps forward and then we would backslide. But then one day he "woke up"! It will be 2 years this December, Steven is back at work, fully fuctional, probably a little more patient than he ever was pre-accident!, and enjoying life again. We thank God each and every day for one more chance at life. There is always hope and I'm glad I never gave up.
