On January 1,2004 my husband, myself and my two children were on our way home
from wal-mart in the town we live in. I was driving and my husband was in the other
seat and the kids were in the back seat. My little boy had ask a question to my
husband and he was turned around talking to him. I watched the car come across the
center line and then before i could react it hit me. We were on a highway going 55
mph and there was nothing i could do. The next thing I know I am sitting in my car
not being able to breath (due to a collapsed lung and a crushed wind pipe)Listning
to my 8 year old daughter scream in pain and my husband scream that his wife was
dead. I didnot hear my 4 year old son at all because someone had taken him out of
the car by the time I came to. I remember thinking he was dead and the feeling I had
I will never be able to explain. I then remember them taking me out of my car and
all I could hear was the jaws of life around me. I can remember people talking and
alot of noise but the memories are very fuzzy. They took my daughter to a local
hospital about 30 miles from where we live and they lifelined my husband, my son,
and my self to a hospital about 65 miles from where we live. I remember them talking
about the helecoptor and i remember the ambulance ride to the landing zone they had
set up at our high school but when I got in the helecoptor I dont remember anything
after that. I woke up in the hospital to find myself on a vent and to learn that my
children were ok, some broken bones for my daughter and a small cut on my sons
spleen. They wouldnt tell me anything about my husband and now I know why. I was
told after I got home that my injuries were so sever that they didnt want to upset
me anymore than what they had to. My husband had suffered a tbi and broke all the
bones in the right side of the face. He had broken his neck as did I and he broke
his back. I also learned that he had ripped his right hand off his body and folded
his legs back under the seat he was sitting in. His seat had went up over the back
seat where my daughter was sitting and left her with a broken right femor, tibia,
and fibula and her elbow was separated. I suffered a broken pelvic bone, right
femor, both hip sockets were cracked, and my neck was broke at the c2 vertebre.
Along with as I mentioned before the collapsed lung and crushed wind pipe. Davids
injury is all new to me I didnt have a clue to how to deal with a tbi person and im
willing to recieve any info from any one who wants to give it. I thank god every day
for our lives and that we are almost fully recovered with the exception of a few
pains now and then and the tbi. After your family being told that you wouldnt live
thru the night and that your husband probably wouldnt live for another 5 hours I
will deal with the pain and try to deal with the tbi.
Again any info is welcome.
