Update 04/26/00

Melissa HI - was in my accident in August of 1999. Just wanted to add an update and picture and let people know that life can come back to normal (somewhat) for people who have suffered from TBI.

I have returned back to work after months and months of tons of different kinds of therapies...I am aware of my problems and know how to combat them when they hit. Life is better when you are a part of it. I just hope that someday I can be of some use to someone who is going through this and is lost like I was when I came here for the first time....This line has been a major source of information when I didn't even know what TBI was...

Hang in there....

Original Story

Hi! My name is Melissa. I am 33 years old and in August 29, 1999, my daughters and I were hit by a driver doing 110 on the freeway. We rolled a rental truck (ford F150) 5 times (from what the report said). When I finally woke up, I realized my kids weren't in the truck with me and I was trapped by the roof. I was sure they were thrown from the vehicle and I thought I was going to lost conciousness again. It was a day I will never forget. Thank the Lord my children were fine...they had left the vehicle via the crushed window and went down the freeway looking for help for me...they thought i was "dead".

I suffered bruising of the brain, had all the testing done and has proved i have short-term memory loss...like i needed a test to prove that....lol. I have had facial problems with my smile (I apparently hit the steering wheel) and have severe problems in the grocery stores and malls with being able to determine what I need to choose. There is a new twist to this brain injury thing every day, but with a sense of humor, I am learning to deal with it. I also have problems with my speech...has been diagnosed as post traumatic stress disorder, however, that doesn't make it any easier to talk! The whole ride has been very interesting. I find that if I try to laugh about it that it makes it easier to deal with. I sometimes get down about it...wish more people could understand the situation. I feel "different" now...very hard to explain to family and friends who knew me before the accident. I understand everything, just in a very different way and sometimes I need to really think about things for much longer.

There needs to be much more information and help on Brain Injury but I do have to say that this web-site has been more informative than any I have found. The people I have met here, i will (hopefully) remember forever...I found them shortly after my injuries and they gave me a more positive outlook on the entire thing...I realized TBI doesn't have to be a negative sentence....sometimes it can be just something that happens....continue life. It's the ONLY option.

Thank you for listening,
