Mike & Carrie Elmer

Hi All,This is my 1st attempt at seeking support from others who have the type of closed head injury I have.In 1995 I was living in Niagara Falls N.Y. w/my wife and 2 sons,we had moved there from Florida so I could go into bussiness w/a good friend who owned a motorcycle shop,I've rode Harley Davidsons since I was 16 yrs old I'm now 39.When the motorcycle shop didn't work out in August of 95 I was on my way to deliver a bike that I'd taken a deposit on to get the money for a truck to move back to Florida,my wife and the boys were already here.About 3 miles from where I lived I had an accident w/an 18 wheeler that made a right turn in front of me,I went over the handlebars and into the side of the truck. In the accident I broke everything but my left leg and was in a coma for 2 weeks then they kept me in one for another 6 weeks to let the broken bones heal. They also had to put a plate around my left eye and cheek bone.My stay in the hospital was 3 months to the day.I was told of my TBI and that as time went things would happen to me faster,I now see a psychologist who is trying to help the best he can,so far we've tryed 3 different meds and I really don't know if any are helping,I DO know that my marriage is almost completely beyond repair, the town I live in in Fla. is small so trying to find decent medical help is next to impossible. The thing thats the worst is trying to find out exactly how much damage I have.I can go days at a time w/out loseing it or days when the smallest thing sets me off,it's very very frustrating not knowing,I can talk w/someone about it but it's hard for them to understand.Really you need to be able to talk w/someone that has been through it to completly understand.I got the 800 # for the brain injury center of Florida and they hooked me up w/a person who runs a TBI support group right here in town,go figure.I'm just happy to have a place to go where people really understand what I'm going through and will probly be going through it the rest of my days.I'm also glad my wife found this and many other sites that deal w/TBI she said she wants to know as much as I do about what to expect now and in the future which is good.
