Phil West

My names Phil and I was working and was involved in a MVA in October 1998 ( I aws T boned) which left me brain injured.

I am told that from early in the event, my prognosis wasn't too good as I had had an internal bleed from the right side ganglia. That stoppd and from then I was unconcious for fourteen days. Mt first recolection was deing in the Redcliffe Rehabilitation Hospital near Brisbane (I was flown there by helicoptor they say). I was there until a few days before Christmas 1989 and then they let me home to Maryborough where I still live. I still have some balance problems, the side of my face is numb and my tongue feels like I have been licking sandpaper.

I have lost a bit of dexterity in my left hand and the arm shakes when I stretch it and my left foot burns all the time. I have a bit of short term memory trouble but have learn't to compensate for that when I do things. I have been extremely lucky in the fact that my wife of 26 years has comtinued to give me and her support and love and our two adult sons also keep in regular contact.

I think that my biggest thing now is impatience with myself and the slowness of improvment. I realise that sone things will never get better but can't wait untill some of the things that might start to go away do so a bit. I have also been following the medical research which seems to be progerssing with (Stem Cell)replacement. I know there are people in worse shape than I am anf look forward to the day when we can get some positive traetemnt instead of just a shake of the head and the time will tell response.
