I am new to this site. A friend, who is also a caregiver, sent me hear. Just like so many stories I have read, our live as we knew it, change in a split second, with a phone call that said my 14 yr old son had a shot to the head. The EMS preparied him for the AreoCare flight for life. Thanks to the good Lord, Hunter is recovering in rehab as I type.

This all started January 22,2000 while he and 3 friends went out rabbit hunting. Their pickup broke down and they walked to another friends house. There was an old, 70 to 80 yrs old, gun that was very sensitive to the touch and a gun Hunter had never been around. The boys decided to shot at cans and I guess, try this old gun out. Just being boys. Hunter had loaded it, we think, and was holding if by the barrel, set it down, and when it hit the ground, it went off. Hitting Hunter on the right side and exiting through the top of his head. He spent 3 hr. in surgery, removing 2/3 of the right frontal lobe. They left part of the skull out to let the brain swell and will replace that in a month. He spent 3 weeks in a coma in PICU, and has been in rehab since 2-15-00.

His progress has been wonderful. He is up walking, with very little help, eating on his own and since the trach and feeding tub has been removed, he is beginning to talk.

He is my miracle child. I have seen God work through prayers. I am so grateful.

This is as far as we have come and I was in hopes there is someone who could e-mail me that has gone through the same accident.

May God bless each.
